What is creative fatigue in ads?
An ad that worked well for three weeks suddenly gets more expensive every day. Nothing in the campaign has changed, and that is the clue: often the audience has simply seen the ad enough.
What happens behind the numbers
On platforms such as Facebook and Instagram an ad set reaches a limited audience, so the longer it runs, the more often each person sees the same image and text. Frequency, the average number of times one person has seen the ad, keeps growing. At some point people scroll past or hide the ad, and the platform has to bid more for the same result.
The typical signs
- Frequency rises steadily while reach grows only slowly.
- The click-through rate (CTR) falls week after week.
- Cost per click and cost per lead go up with an unchanged budget and audience.
There is no universal frequency at which fatigue starts. A small local audience tires faster than a broad one, and a strong offer lasts longer than a weak one. Compare an ad with its own first weeks rather than with a fixed threshold.
Fatigue or something else?
Rising costs have other causes too: seasonal competition in the auction, a changed landing page or form, or ad sets competing for the same people. And a stable cost per lead can hide falling lead quality, so look at what happened to the leads, not only at their price.
A small example
A lead ad for a local service runs for four weeks. In week one frequency is 1.5, CTR 1.8% and cost per lead 12 EUR. In week four frequency is 4.1, CTR 0.9% and cost per lead 21 EUR, with the same budget and audience. A new ad with a different image and headline, shown to the same audience, brings the cost per lead back close to its starting level. (illustrative numbers)
How to deal with it
- Run several creatives in parallel so the platform can rotate them.
- Refresh the hook, the image or the format, not only a word in the text.
- Widen the audience if it is very small.
How OrgLines helps
In OrgLines, pivot reports on connected Meta accounts break results down by campaign, placement, age and day, and can be sent to Telegram on a schedule, so a slow decline shows early. You can pause weak ads and upload new images, and because leads land in the Lead Center with their campaign, you see whether a tired ad's leads still become clients.
