What is a tire hotel?
Twice a year, drivers in regions with a winter tire season need somewhere to keep the set they are not using. Many have no room for four wheels at home, and that is the gap a tire hotel fills.
What the service usually includes
- Intake: the set is taken off the car or handed over, cleaned and inspected.
- A condition record: tread depth of each tire, the production date from the DOT code, visible damage and whether rims are included.
- Storage: in a cool, dry and dark room, away from heat and sources of ozone such as electric motors. Complete wheels are usually stacked or hung; tires without rims are best stored upright.
- Return: before the season the customer is reminded, comes in and the set is fitted.
Why the record at intake matters
A stored set belongs to the customer, not to the shop. If the customer later says a tire arrived with more tread or without a cut, the intake record and a few photos are the only evidence.
The hard part: finding the set again
The classic failure is a sticker with a surname on a shelf that has since been rearranged. When the customer arrives, staff walk the aisles while the car waits on the lift. The fix is simple discipline: every storage place has an address such as zone, shelf and bin, the address is recorded against the set, and every move is recorded too.
A small example
A customer leaves four winter wheels in April. At intake staff measure 6.5, 6.5, 5.0 and 5.0 mm, note DOT 4221 on all four (week 42 of 2021), take photos and place the set in zone B, shelf 4, bin 2. In October the customer is reminded, arrives, and the set is found at once. Because the rear pair was recorded at 5.0 mm, staff can suggest replacing it before fitting. (illustrative numbers)
